In the late night of September 8th, Morocco was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, resulting in a death toll exceeding 2,100. In addition to dispatching search and rescue assistance, countries around the world have also initiated relief supplies and donations. The Binance charity organization announced that it will airdrop up to $3 million worth of BNB to Binance users living in the earthquake-affected region.

Binance Utilizes Proof of Address to Identify Customers

Binance reports having around 70,000 users in Morocco and will be using Proof of Address (POA) to differentiate customers. Starting on 9/12, eligible users will receive a BNB airdrop.

  • Users who completed the POA before 9/9, proving their location in the severely affected Marrakesh-Safi Province, will directly receive $100 worth of BNB.
  • For customers who have not completed the POA, as long as they prove their location in Marrakesh-Safi Province by 9/30, they will receive $25 worth of BNB.
  • Other active trading users in Morocco will receive $10 worth of BNB.

Cryptocurrency Provides Immediate Support to Disaster Victims

After natural disasters, people often need additional funds for medical supplies, food, and other basic necessities, but disasters can disrupt traditional banking services. Cryptocurrency transfers offer fast, low-cost, borderless, and transparent transactions, making them increasingly used for donations and disaster relief.

Binance CEO and Founder CZ stated:

The earthquake has had a devastating impact on the people of Morocco. We hope to provide support to those affected. For Moroccan users who receive these donations but have not been affected by the earthquake, we ask them to transfer the funds to those in need.

Binance Charity has also launched a public donation address, where all cryptocurrency donations will be given to authorized non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to help those in need. Accepted cryptocurrencies include BNB, BTC, ETH, USDC, USDT, or BUSD.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan has announced a $500,000 donation to assist in the recovery and reconstruction efforts for Moroccan earthquake victims.
