Large-Scale Cyber Attack Hits the United States
According to Reuters, an unknown hacker group has been monitoring internal messages of the U.S. Treasury and Commerce Departments for over half a year. Sources revealed that the hackers carried out a "supply chain attack" by surreptitiously inserting malicious code into updates released by IT company SolarWinds. In a statement on Sunday, SolarWinds stated:Statement:
"We have been advised that this attack was likely conducted by an external nation state and was designed for highly targeted, manual supply chain attacks, not broad systemic attacks."
SolarWinds aims to develop software for enterprises to manage their networks, systems, and information technology infrastructure. Its clients include many Fortune 500 companies, top ten U.S. telecommunications providers, as well as government agencies like the U.S. military, State Department, NSA, and the U.S. President's office. The diverse customer base of SolarWinds has raised concerns in the U.S. intelligence community that other government agencies may be at risk. Sources stated:
"This is much bigger than a single agency. This is a large-scale cyber espionage activity against the U.S. government and its interests."
Hackers also breached the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration's (NTIA) office software (Microsoft Office365). Sources mentioned that the agency's employee emails were under hacker surveillance for months. Due to the severity of this cyber espionage incident, the White House even convened a National Security Council meeting last Saturday. John Ullyot, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, stated that they are taking all necessary actions to identify and address any potential issues related to this situation.
The U.S. government has not publicly attributed the origin of this hacker attack, but three sources revealed that Russia is preliminarily identified as the main culprit behind the attack. However, upon learning of this incident, the Russian Foreign Ministry immediately issued aStatementrefuting these claims as another unfounded accusation by the U.S. media.
