Birthday on the chain! Reddit users celebrate the birth of their son by writing his name and birthday into the Bitcoin blockchain.

A Reddit user named "Tookdrums" posted a message on June 14th at block height 634768, celebrating the birth of his first son, "Noah," marking a memorable moment in his life. This message will be permanently recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain, unable to be deleted or tampered with.

Tookdrums wrote the message "Hello, Noah! Welcome to this world, little one" in hexadecimal script in a Bitcoin transaction of 0.00104395 here.

Note: OP_RETURN acts as a "note" function, available in wallets like ETH and EOS, where Bitcoin's OP_RETURN can write arbitrary text but must be converted to hexadecimal data. However, many Bitcoin community members are actually against this feature, believing that Bitcoin should be used to record rigorous financial data rather than arbitrary messages.

By writing to the Bitcoin blockchain, as long as there is at least one person mining in the world, the chained data will exist permanently. Tookdrums wrote:

I have permanently recorded the birth of my first child in the best, tamper-proof, and decentralized database.

Tookdrums told Decrypt, "I think it's a fun and great way to commemorate important moments, and it's also a good opportunity to open a small savings account for him."

Tookdrums, a married man from Europe, mentioned having 0.05 BTC in the account currently and plans to continue depositing cryptocurrencies into the account, possibly adding messages from time to time.

He stated, "I plan to give him the private key on his 18th birthday, but if he's very interested, I might talk to him about on-chain messages before he turns 18."

It is understood that Tookdrums is not a blockchain industry professional but simply a Bitcoin enthusiast. When asked if he would record the birth of another child on the blockchain or help the child deposit Bitcoin in the future, Tookdrums gave an affirmative answer. He jokingly said:

I can already see myself tricking my kids in the future, saying, you all get coins, your brother gets Bitcoin, and I'll give you Dogecoin.

Although the practice of putting data on the blockchain is still far from widespread, the crypto community continues to use the immutable and undeletable nature of blockchain to record memorable and significant events. Just like the case of Dr. Li Wenliang, the whistleblower of the Wuhan coronavirus, who was condemned by authorities and eventually passed away after deliberate concealment. Dr. Li's story has been recorded on Ethereum through smart contract code, outlining a monument with the code and the word "RIP".
