On July 2nd, Nestle announced on its official website collaboration with the blockchain platform OpenSC to develop a distributed ledger system, operating independently without affecting Nestle's ongoing participation in the IBM Food Trust ecosystem.

According to reports, the pilot project will continue for six months, and the decision on whether to proceed with the trial run will depend on the "feasibility, viability, and scalability" of the system, as well as the level of data verification. The service will involve the development of QR codes, apps, and supply chain information platforms.

A company spokesperson stated:

For us, the key is that product information can be easily and seamlessly accessed, providing consumers with independently verifiable data to drive market transparency. The transparency mechanism will also improve food safety and quality control.

The initiative will initially track milk from New Zealand farms to Nestle facilities in the Middle East and will expand to include palm oil production in the Americas. Nestle will evaluate the scalability of the application and integrate it based on the time needed for certain retail products.
