The Norwegian airline, Norwegian Air, based in Fornebu, has announced the upcoming launch of a Bitcoin exchange service called Norwegian Block Exchange NBX. Users of Norwegian Air will be able to purchase tickets using Bitcoin and earn rewards points through transactions, which can be used for travel discounts and other related benefits.
Norwegian Air offers international flights to a total of 36 countries and 115 cities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. With frequent flights, Norwegian Air has become the third-largest airline in Northern Europe. However, its financial reports for 2018 did not reflect corresponding profits.
A report indicates that Norwegian Air lost approximately $170 million last year, with the group's stock price falling over 75% since April 2018. Faced with deficit financial data and increasing engine mechanical issues, the airline is gradually losing its competitive edge compared to other airlines.
After promising investors better financial performance this year, the company announced its foray into the cryptocurrency field. Despite Bitcoin's market value dropping over 80% last year, it has become one of the best-performing assets this year.
As Bitcoin continues to be adopted by travel companies worldwide, well-known hotel and flight booking sites like Expedia accept Bitcoin payments, and the U.S. online travel agency CheapAir also supports Bitcoin payments on its platform.
Caleb Yeoh, CEO of the crypto travel payment platform TravelbyBit, commented:
When you travel around the world, you have to convert multiple currencies, and exchange rates can be confusing. Sometimes you might have a hard time finding an ATM, or even encounter the possibility of fraud. A global currency like Bitcoin makes a lot of sense.
It is understood that Norwegian Air has not specified the exact date of listing on the exchange. According to their official blog, the launch of the exchange may just be the beginning, as the group aims to drive integration between the overall aviation industry and the cryptocurrency sector.
