MetaMask Introduces New Software "Snaps"

The popular Web3 wallet MetaMask recently announced the launch of a new software called "Snaps." This innovation aims to enable MetaMask to operate on blockchains that are incompatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) itself.

According to the official MetaMask documentation, a Snap is a JavaScript application that can run in an isolated environment and customize the wallet interface. It can introduce new API functionalities to MetaMask or provide compatibility for various blockchain systems.

"Snaps" Expand Blockchain Support, Analyze Transactions, and Enhance Security

Previously, MetaMask primarily supported Ethereum and its compatible blockchains, collectively known as EVM chains such as BNB Chain, Polygon, and others. However, the introduction of Snaps means it can now be used on non-EVM blockchains like Cosmos, Solana, and more.

Snaps are specific software modules that can be integrated into the MetaMask wallet to adapt to various additional use cases. For example, it can enable the wallet to provide compatibility across different blockchain ecosystems.

Snaps includes wallets for Tezos, StarkNet, Aptos, and Sui that can be integrated into MetaMask:

Snaps also features transaction preview functions like Tenderly to help you simulate transactions, avoid failed transactions, and save on fees:

Snaps also includes transaction analysis tools like Threat Intel to help detect potential phishing transactions or malicious protocols:

MetaMask Welcomes Collaboration with Third-Party Developers

MetaMask plans to release over 34 Snaps initially, which have undergone security audits and been whitelisted. MetaMask will allow third-party developers to independently release and maintain these Snaps. Currently, over 150 developers have joined this innovative development effort.

Christian Montoya, the product manager for MetaMask Snaps, stated: "We are building MetaMask Snaps as an open innovation platform and will not charge developers." He emphasized that permissionless innovation is the cornerstone of decentralized systems and should not have any gatekeeping restrictions.
