According to a recent job posting on LinkedIn, e-commerce giant Amazon, headquartered in Seattle, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its FinTech advertising team, with a focus on blockchain ledger projects.

This FinTech team is based in Boulder, Colorado, focusing on billing and reconciliation systems, providing transparency for multinational financial data. The job posting mentions:

This is an opportunity to define the Greenfield technical architecture direction for Amazon's advertising business using blockchain technology.

Greenfield is a term borrowed from the construction industry, representing undeveloped land, often used in the software field. For example, "greenfield development" refers to developing a brand-new system or software project without existing framework constraints.

It is currently unknown what type of blockchain Amazon will use for advertising purposes. It is reported that Amazon Web Services (AWS) blockchain team has built a proprietary blockchain called Quantum Ledger Database (QLDB), with AWS's managed blockchain service connecting with Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric.

Amazon has made various attempts to simplify the opaque and complex value chain in advertising using blockchain technology. The general direction is that a distributed ledger can allow everyone to see where advertising costs are going and prevent discrepancies.

Similar to how the blockchain of cryptocurrencies shows which addresses send or receive funds, along with the amounts and timestamps, an advertising technology ledger can track how many ads are placed and which intermediaries are adjusting prices.

Whether Amazon will launch a blockchain-based advertising reconciliation platform remains to be seen. However, the company has a strong track record in developing in-house solutions, such as AWS’ QLDB, a centrally managed immutable data ledger that is now available in limited preview.
