Discord may support Ethereum wallets, community backlash significant, thousands of posts unite in protest

Yesterday, Packy McCormick, the founder of Not Boring Capital, published an article on Twitter discussing the development and future direction of the community platform Discord. In the article, it was mentioned that Discord is well-suited for developing its own cryptocurrency wallet. The CEO of Discord responded enthusiastically to the article.

What is Discord?

Discord is definitely not unfamiliar to those who have been playing games or following news in the cryptocurrency circle for a long time. It is a free online social platform designed specifically for communities, known for its emphasis on privacy protection, information retention, and high-quality voice calls. Many DAOs or blockchain protocols have their own exclusive Discord communities. Currently, there are approximately 150 million active users each month.

Discord Cryptocurrency Wallet

In an article, Packy McCormick believes that due to the diverse types of communities and large number of users on Discord, if Discord could support cross-chain wallet functionality, users would benefit in many ways:

  1. Users can easily send money and cryptocurrencies as if they were sending messages.
  2. When managing communities based on token ownership, there is no longer a need for third-party software like Collab.Land.
  3. It will be more convenient for communities to airdrop tokens to their users.

Of course, having a wallet also has many benefits for the platform:

  1. Discord can tokenize transactions, launch staking, lending, and swapping functions.
  2. Cryptocurrency wallets are the passport to a broader future internet world, making Discord's position even more important.
  3. Build more experiences around the list of coins in the user's wallet.

Packy McCormick also compares Discord to a Web3 Sleeper, believing that the cryptocurrency wallet will be the identity and account in Web3. If Discord can develop wallet functionality, it will greatly enhance the platform's utility and importance.

Regarding this article, Discord CEO Jason Citron replied on Twitter:

probably nothing, implying that something is about to happen.

He also posted a feature to link to an Ethereum wallet, and the "Display on profile" feature at the back, making people curious about what will be displayed.

Backlash in Discord Communities

After this news came out, Discord's Feedback Center was flooded with thousands of articles, mostly opposing Discord's support for cryptocurrency applications or NFT features. Articles supporting this change received strong negative reviews. Most of these opposing articles are against the speculative nature of the cryptocurrency industry, believing it is just a Ponzi scheme. They think that if Discord makes such changes, it will lose a large number of users.
