Meta provides LLM support to the U.S. military, partners with Microsoft and Amazon to strengthen U.S. national security.

Meta recently announced that it is making its large language model LLM available for use by the U.S. military and defense contractors, and is collaborating with tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Oracle, and Palantir to integrate AI technology into national security and strengthen America's cyber defense.

Open Source LLM Drives Innovation and Efficiency

Meta indicates that LLM is currently being applied in various fields such as research, entrepreneurship, and development. For example:

  1. Oracle: Using LLM to simplify aircraft maintenance documents and expedite repair processes.
  2. Scale AI: Using LLM to support operational plans and enhance enemy vulnerability identification mechanisms.
  3. Lockheed Martin: Introducing LLM to AI Factory to accelerate code generation and data analysis.

Note: Oracle is a backend database provider, Scale AI is an AI technology provider, and Lockheed Martin is a U.S. aerospace and defense contractor.

Cloud Collaboration and Open Source Bring New Opportunities

Meta mentions that tech giants like AWS and Microsoft Azure are also using LLM to assist governments in handling confidential documents securely on cloud systems. IBM has integrated LLM into the watsonx platform to allow users to run it on their own infrastructure, strengthening data security and privacy.

Meta states that if open-source AI technologies like this are utilized effectively, they can enhance the U.S. economy and national defense capabilities, helping the U.S. maintain its leading position in the AI competition. Meta hopes that LLM can become a globally recognized technical standard like Linux and Android, positively impacting the world's infrastructure and economic systems.

Note: watsonx is IBM's commercial cloud platform.

AI Boosting National Security and International Cooperation

Meta emphasizes that LLM can handle massive data, self-reason, and provide practical insights, offering significant assistance in areas such as logistics optimization, tracking terrorist financial flows, and network defense for national security. Meta further states that as the U.S. faces intense AI competition with China, it must actively engage in this field to ensure that future global technical standards are based on openness and transparency.

Meta is also collaborating with Deloitte to promote the application of LLM in the public sector, enhancing education, energy supply, and SME development. Additionally, they are partnering with UNESCO to develop a translation platform supporting up to 200 languages to facilitate global communication.

Note: Deloitte is one of the Big Four accounting firms globally, and UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
